“Orientation Day” Scheduled in August

For the first time ever, a “before school Orientation Day” will be held at Logan Junior High on August 17th, at 10:00 a.m. in Pannebaker Gymnasium.  This orientation day will be open to any incoming 6th, 7th, or 8th grader who would like to attend.

The purpose of the orientation day is to provide incoming students with an opportunity to ask the principal some questions they may have regarding the start of the year, see the general, physical layout of Logan Junior High’s building, and to bring in (if they so choose) some of their beginning of the year supplies and materials so they do not have to be burdened with carrying those to school on the first day.

The orientation will begin with a question and answer session in Pannebaker Gymnasium.  At some point, students will be shown their homeroom locations, where they will have the opportunity to drop off any supplies and materials they brought to the orientation…On the first day of school, they will be able to “reunite” with those supplies at the beginning of the day, and place those in their assigned lockers.  If needed, a general building tour will finish the orientation day, highlighting the significant rooms/locations in Logan Junior High.

Obviously, it is not mandatory for the students to attend this orientation session, however it is open to any student who would like to attend!!!

I look forward to seeing you in August!!!

Attendance Letters…

Throughout the course of the 2009-2010 school year, I received a larger amount of questions than normal regarding the mailing and receipt of attendance letters.  Let me take this opportunity to provide you with some general information regarding those attendance letters, in order to alleviate some confusion about their intent and the procedures that surround them…

  1. Randomly during the school year, attendance reports are run for each student in order to identify any attendance issues that might be developing…The intent is not to identify students that we think are “negligently” missing school, but to rather identify any and all students that might need some assistance in some way…Possibly it is a specific health concern that we are not aware of that we can communicate with the entire staff, etc.  After these reports are run, parents might receive anywhere from a 3, 5, 7, or 10 day attendance letter from the office acknowledging the student’s missed days…
  2. Due to the reports being run randomly throughout the year, it is possible that a family might immediately receive a 7 or 10 day letter…It all depends on the number of days missed by the student since the previously run report…
  3. Should an attendance letter be received on a student when a specific family concern has caused the student absences, I would always encourage the parents to contact me in the office and explain the situation…At this time, proper arrangements can be made regarding any future student absence, and new procedural “rules” can be applied…

…Simply put, it is not our intent to first alarm or offend anyone by mailing any of our attendance letters.  What we hope, is that it promotes good and/or added communication between school and home so that a resolution to any attendance issue can be reached.  Truly, there are some attendance issues that need more formal follow-up with both physicians and the truancy officer, yet those issues can be worked through as well….

…Speaking of attendance, an interesting statistic that I have shared with parents over the years…

“The average student in the state of Illinois misses 5 school days over the course of the entire school year.”

“Documentation” Note…

Beginning next year, you will notice that your child/children will not be bringing home a student handbook after the first day of attendance…Up to this point, traditionally, that is what has been done.  Instead, in an effort to save on a significant amount of paper and printing, we will be sending home a “sign-off” sheet that references the website where the handbook can be viewed, and that you were able to read that as a parent/guardian.  Certainly, if you choose to have a hard copy of the handbook, we will be able to provide that by handing them out from the office.

The referenced “sign-off” sheet will also include language that allows parents/guardians to grant permission for their child/children to attend all school sponsored field trips that might occur throughout the school year.  Obviously, specific information about any trips would be provided to the parents/guardians closer to the date of the specific field trip…We thought it would be easier for you to grant permission on a form such as this instead of having to remember to get the permission slip back in a timely fashion for each trip that occurs…

Have a great summer and I look forward to seeing you during the 2010-2011 school year!!!
